Cross country: Review for 2004/05

The cross-country team has been fortunate to have the addition of some excellent new runners in Year Three.  This has really helped to boost our team results and once again Derwent Lodge has proved how strong we are in competition.  We ran three out of five races in the West Kent cross-country league; snow caused two cancellations!  In the league, the U9 girls' team won, the U11 girls' team won, and, together with Yardley Court, Somerhill won overall.  Hannah Flemington (Year3) achieved a Gold medal; Alex Young (Year 4) and Rowena Maitland (Year 3) were Silver medallists, and Olivia Rendall (Year 6) won a Bronze medal.

Alex Young also achieved a Silver medal running in the Woodmansee Shield event where our U9 team came first, our U11's came second, and we won the shield on the girls' combined scores.

Our strong U8 team, consisting of all Year Three's (Hannah, Rowena, Lily Wadsworth and Charlotte Short), came home with the trophy from the Hazelwood Relays and our combined girls' teams came second overall in a very strong field.

The Inter House cross-country was great fun and everyone took part with much enthusiasm.  The junior race was very exciting and the first six runners home fought it out all round the course.  Well done to Coniston who won both the junior and senior races.  Certificates were awarded to Alex Young, Victoria Miles and Katie Hoskin, who made the most improvement in their respective year group from last year's race.

A big event in our calendar here is The Bracken Cup and, in what is predominantly a boys' race, the U9 girls came 6th out of 11 schools, which was a tremendous achievement for the girls! Rowena Maitland achieved a Silver and Hannah Flemington and Olivia Rendall both got Bronze medals.  This was the first time the girls were awarded medals on their own merit - an historic moment!

Finally, in March, we entered the Dobson Trophy where Rowena collected another medal, this time a Bronze.  The first three girls home, including our runner, were way ahead of the field - we have great hopes for the future.

The element of cross-country that shines through here at Derwent Lodge, and that the parents always comment upon, is that the girls so love their running.  This is because the sport is an individual event linked to being part of a team.
