Combined U9/U11 team – Woodmansee Shield and the WKCCL
The highlight of this successful season was in October, when Somerhill hosted the first ever IAPS regional cross-country event. Conditions were perfect, and 358 young runners completed the course. Beth Peachey ran a fantastic race to finish 1st in the Girls U9 event. Octavia Bathurst and Kathleen Faes finished just outside the medals in 4th and 5th place but these scores were very useful, and helped Derwent Lodge win the team event. The U11’s were 3rd, with Isobel Nicklin achieving 9th place out of 77 runners.
As a team, the U9’s have had a fabulous season winning 5 out of 6 titles. Beth Peachey has been outstanding, with many wins to be proud of. Kathleen Faes is our talented Yr 3 runner who has finished in the top 8 in all six of her U9 races. Francesca Reali, Holly Hayward, Octavia Bathurst, Holly Thomson-Frost, Alice Tyler and Olivia Gilchrist-Fisher have all proved their fitness and ability on some gruelling courses.
The Year 5 girls have, on the whole, provided the talent for the U11 team, and as a year group they are very strong. They can look forward to competing again as U11’s next season, and the experience they have achieved this year in competition should prove useful. Working as a team to win the Woodmansee Shield was their best achievement, and they were 3rd in three other events, and 4th in the Dobson Trophy. Isobel Nicklin and Eloise Wainwight have been the stars of this team and have displayed courage and determination in their running. Charlotte Henderson and Mhairi Fenton have also been rewarded with good results in competition. 13 other senior girls have had one or two runs, and all performed well.
In January, every girl took part in one of the Inter-House Cross-country events. The seniors ran in thick fog, and thankfully, all were accounted for at the end of an exciting afternoon! Grasmere easily won the team event, and the top three individuals were Eloise Wainwright, Isobel Nicklin and Hannah Kinsey. The junior event took place the following day and, again, Grasmere won the team event with Beth Peachey, Francesca Reali and Kathleen Faes taking the individual titles. At DL, we also appreciate and reward effort and achievement, and the following girls received certificates for progress: Ella Peto, Maddie Gallagher, Elizabeth Tong, Olivia Irwin, Meg Roberts and Clara Berkley.
