The girls love their athletics, and the season just gone was another successful one with seven school records broken, either at the Kent Championships, Kent College athletics meeting or on Sports Days. Kathleen Faes set a new Kent U12 record for 1500m in the IAPS Kent Championships in Ashford of 5m 23.11s, then broke it again in the National Championships where she ran 5m 16.4s. Millie Davies and Kathleen represented Kent in the National Championships in Birmingham, where Kathleen won a Bronze medal in a race that turned out to be the fastest on record for that event. Her achievement is all the more amazing, as she is a year young, and it is only the second time that she had run that distance. The two sports afternoons were a huge success, and all the girls took part in at least one field event, a track event and the house relay. Year Six chose a jump and a throw, as well as a track event and the house relay. In addition, the fastest four 200m runners of the term ran in the prestigious 4 x 200m relay. The house event comprised of every girl running 100m for her house, so officially this year, it was a 33 x 100m race, won by Ullswater – possibly the like of which has never been seen before! Likewise, the parents race was enormously popular.
In lessons, athletics continues to develop at DL, and the senior girls are now taught Javelin, Shot and Discus, with equipment appropriate to their age, to complement the programme. All girls have access to their personal best scores from previous attempts, and this provides the best incentive for progress. Two after school athletics clubs take place in the summer term, and over 50 girls attended these voluntary clubs.
