Netball is the major sport for Lent Term. However, the Year three girls have a few sessions of netball when they join us in September in preparation for matches. Netball clubs are offered to all year groups and are well attended. Netball matches for Years three and four take place in both of the winter terms. Most senior matches are played in the Lent term.
At Derwent Lodge we are proud of the fact that not just the top players are selected for teams. All girls get the opportunity to play in matches against local schools. The U10A team enjoyed a weekend away in the Isle of Wight, and played extremely well against teams from Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex to finish as Runners-up in the Ryde School netball tournament. In other fixtures, The A teams have won 12 of their 15 matches and the mixed ability teams have played 38 matches; with 15 wins, 4 draws and 19 losses. Almost every girl has been a team captain, and match reports have been of a very high standard this year.
We have the largest number of girls in each year group compared to other schools in the area, and most schools will only play two teams at any level. Our 'A' teams are generally the strongest players in each yeargroup, but any girl of any standard can be selected for the mixed ability teams so that we can provide maximum opportunities for all players, and provide a 'fair' match for our opposition. These are often called our 'Blue' and 'Yellow' teams. Every girl in DL enjoyed playing in at least three netball matches last season, and most played in considerably more.
Netball skills sessions are popular with the girls, and these take place during lunch breaks for the juniors and after school for the seniors. Team practices are held during lesson time so that all girls are able to attend.
