The highlight of last season was certainly watching the U11 team develop into an awesome squad of players who played their socks off in three rounds of the National Knock-out tournament. They easily beat Royal Russell; Windlesham House and Cumnor House, with an Innings to spare in the first two matches! The quarter-final match was hastily arranged against Holy Cross, and the scene was set. Unfortunately, our batters couldn’t find space to hit into, and were caught out. Additionally, a few dropped catches were made by our nervy players, so we didn’t get the chance to repeat our success of 2004 when we were national runners-up. However, the good news is that six of the squad were in Year Five, so next year is looking good!
Every girl enjoyed the opportunity to play in matches last season, and we won well over half of our fixtures. The U10 A team showed particular talent, and their most memorable moment must have been the match against Sutton Valence, which ended in an 18 all draw! One comment from an SV Dad (who was watching rounders for the first time) said that it was so exciting; it should be shown on Sky TV! The U8’s and U9’s made great progress with their skills, and almost half of the junior girls can throw in excess of 15m, which is great for deep fielding. More work on catching big hits and throws into the bases will benefit these young teams, but the future looks bright in rounders.
Rounders is played by all girls from Year Three, and they have lessons on a weekly basis. Everyone is given the opportunity to play in matches against other schools, regardless of standard. Clubs are well-attended either at lunchtime for the juniors, or after school for the seniors. Rounders is a summer sport, but if the spring weather is good, training starts early, so that we are ready and prepared for the busy schedule of fixtures and tournaments.
