Our swimming pool opened in January 2009, and is a wonderful addition to our extensive sports facilities.
Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim; swimming is not only a sport, but also a skill that can save your life. Swimming at Somerhill continues to develop, giving the children plenty of chances to gain confidence and take part in competition. The weekly swim sessions for Years Three and Four are working well, allowing pupils to strengthen and progress their swimming strokes. The lunchtime swim squad sessions are a big success with the senior girls really committing to the programme. The senior girls have lessons in the first half of each term where they develop their stroke technique, and supplement their water safety knowledge. They also enjoy choreographing synchronised swimming routines, and playing water polo! After school swimming clubs take place every Thursday and Friday in the winter terms, and any girl may join these.
The DL girls are all working hard to focus on core swimming skills so that swimmers can develop through the sport and use these skills to succeed at the highest level. There were some very strong individuals who performed brilliantly last year in the pool. They set the school year off with a bang with their success in the IAPS regional rounds. The DL swim team did extremely well this year with gala wins over Holmewood House and Kent College. The Interhouse swimming gala took place at the end of March, and every girl had the opportunity to swim in an individual race of her choice and a relay.
Everyone is already talking about the forthcoming Olympic Games which will have a big impact on swimming and give a huge boost to aquatics in the capital and surrounding regions. We aim to continue to advance the swimming at Somerhill to get the most out of this wonderful facility we have and to assist in helping individuals enjoy getting involved in the sport!
