English at Derwent Lodge
English at Derwent Lodge is taught in form groups using a variety of exciting and up to the minute resources which cover the requirements of the National Curriclum.
The syllabus is enriched by visits to the theatre, visiting speakers, poets or writers, Book Week and a whole school Poetry and Prose competition.
Children are encouraged to use their creativity through activities involving speaking and listening, drama and writing both individually and collaboratively. The girls also take the English Speaking Board exams in Year 3, as a group, and in Year 4, individually.
Reading is encouraged and there is an extensive school library stocked with reading and reference books where the school librarian is on hand to offer help and guidance.
English is also taught within the overall curriculum and pupils learn to express themselves confidently and fluently and communicate clearly and effectively.
Please see a suggested reading list appropriate for girls preparing for Common Entrance 11+.
