English at Yardley Court
At Yardley Court we aim to make English an exciting and creative learning experience. One of our main aims is to nurture a life-long love of literature through exposure to a wide variety of genres and authors. To encourage this, we hold an annual "Book Week" during which an author visits the school to talk to the boys. Our library is well stocked and we have our own Librarian who supports and encourages our in-house reading programme.
Throughout the school the pupils are taught spelling through spelling strategies. We also have a structured Literacy programme to enable our pupils to attain securely controlled spelling, punctuation and grammar.
We encourage our boys to become confident and articulate speakers through participating in informal presentations and the externally examined English Speaking Board exam.
To assist learning and understanding, our ICT resources and DVDs are extensively used throughout the school.
Boys are taken to a wide range of theatrical productions throughout the year to further enhance their enjoyment of the subject.
English teaching at Yardley Court aims to be imaginative, engaging and accessible to all. During their time here the pupils will learn how to respond personally and critically to texts. We hope that the skills acquired in English will enable them to communicate clearly and accurately in all areas of the curriculum.
