Football: Review for 2002-03

1st XI
This year's team consisted of a mix of boys from Years Seven and Eight. The older boys gave the defence stability and also scored regularly in attack. The younger players adapted well to the midfield positions and proved their worth with telling passes and interceptions. Playing eight matches through the season and losing only two, one against a strong, physical Holmewood House team, was a great record and one that was gained through hard work in the coaching sessions. We played to our strengths and the match against Ashdown House was arguably our best performance of the season.
Full Colours:
W Kyte, J Allington, 0 Smith, T Spurling.
Half Colours:
S Hyatt-Twynam, T Lindsel1, M Paulus, R Brandt, M Brauer, ] Corneille, C Bellamy.
COLTS
The Colts have had a tremendous season in which they lost just two games from a total of thirty matches played. The standard of football certainly
progressed throughout the season and the finishing around the box at times was deadly. Both the 'B' and 'D' teams remained unbeaten and should
feel very proud of their achievements.
UNDER 10s
The Year Five boys were a most talented group this year and recorded excellent results across all four teams. There was intense pressure on places
in the 'A' and 'B' teams and no one could afford to rest on his laurels. The 'A' team went unbeaten for the season though we had to come from behind to earn a draw with a talented St Michael's team. We enjoyed beating a previously unbeaten Holmewood House towards the end of the season 1-0 and probably played our best football against New Beacon in a convincing 5-0 win. Charlie Farrant led the team in midfield and was ably supported by Rory Macleod and James Orchard. The 'B' team had some great victories but suffered a couple of surprise defeats when we just couldn't manage to convert our chances. The 'C' and 'D' teams also won several victories and all the boys n the year-group worked hard to develop their soccer skills; well done!
UNDER 9s
The U9s season got off to a very shaky start at the annual Hawthorns tournament in Surrey in early September. Having crashed out of the main
tournament at the bottom of their group, the boys, led by George Dewdney, managed to lift themselves and started playing the sort of football of which they are capable and went on to win the plate competition, beating St. Michael's 3-0 in the final. From this point, the teams across the year group didn't look back, producing some creditable performances against all the usual rivals, the most memorable being an 8-1 defeat of DCPS at home in front of a great crowd.
UNDER 8s
The U8 boys have enjoyed great success and the 'A' and 'B' teams remained largely unbeaten. With such a large year group we decided to introduce some internal fixtures in order to give every boy the opportunity to play competitively. This was a resounding success. It is often noted that the boys probably played with a greater determination in these internal fixtures against their peers than if they had been playing other school teams.
Well done this year, boys, you were a delight to teach and watch!
