Football

Overall
Our soccer teams played 122 matches in total, winning 78, drawing 16 and losing 28. We had three unbeaten teams – the U9A and B teams and the Colts A. The 1st XI had their best season for several years, winning nine of eleven fixtures and playing some really attractive soccer. The Colts won The Hawthorns 5-a-side tournament whole the U10B team won the St Michael's 5-a-side tournament.

Colts A
After an encouraging start to the season, the Colts A team  struggled to maintain a sufficiently high level of consistency and certainly should have won at least two of the three matches they lost out of the ten played. The defence, marshalled well by Ronan Corcoran and Alex Weir, held firm in the majority of matches, providing an axis from which the midfielders could perform. Charlie Farrant and Nick Spurling showed excellent vision in the middle of the park and their range of passing often created problems for the opposing defence. Although we scored heavily at times, we occasionally lacked 'real' penetration and movement in the opposition's half and didn't always create sufficient space even though dominating possessionj of the ball.

The 5-a-side and 7-a-side tournaments held at St Michael's and Hawthorns respectively, proved to be the highlights of the season. We managed to reach both finals, winning the prestigious Hawthorns trophy for the second year running. The football played was of a high quality and showed the boys' true ability when it really mattered. The performance against Rose Hill clearly stood out and, in that match, the team produced some of the best football I have seen during my four years here. A special mention should go to Nick Brauer who was not only the outstanding player in both tournaments but also a brave goalkeeper and shot-stopper throughout the season.
