Hockey: Review for 2002-03

Hockey is an up-and-coming sport for girls at Derwent Lodge. Good use was made of the Bickmore Hall and netball courts for training, and again the lunchtime clubs were tremendously popular with the girls.

Our first season of hockey matches for the U10s and U11s proved successful. We played Marlborough House, Dulwich Prep and Rose Hill, and the girls soon discovered how to score goals. Katie Harris scored 11 goals in three matches.

Our strength in fixtures appeared to be our ability to play set pieces, such as hit-outs and penalty corners as practised. The girls played intelligently and learned a great deal about supporting each other, spacing, channelling and systems.

It has been a most rewarding first season of hockey fixtures, and we look forward to playing on the new Astroturf at Somerhill next season.
