Hockey: Review for 2003-04

Overview
The addition of the Astroturf has created the opportunity to develop hockey as a major game at Derwent Lodge. Year 3 have had some skills training, and Years 4 to 6 have consolidated previously learned skills, discovered the benefits of playing different systems, and all played in house matches in March. I have been amazed at their sponge-like ability to soak up information regarding the playing of this technically demanding game!  After school training has been successful, and despite poor results this season, we are ready to take on the best as September approaches.

U11A Hockey

All the matches were close, and Derwent Lodge often looked sharp on the field. However, it takes time to build a winning team and maybe one season was just not enough to reach the required level to play against the quality teams who formed the opposition. There were many times when it all seemed to 'click' and the chosen formation of sweeper, two full-backs, centre half and two up front performed really well. Our strength was certainly in defence with Vicky (used to padding up to play GK for her roller hockey team), saving some very good shots. Rose was always solid as centre half, and Grace was excellent as sweeper. All the girls ought to achieve first team places as U12s at their new schools I hope that they forget the scores this season, and dwell on the times that it all went according to plan on the pitch.

U11B
Both their matches were against A team opposition, so this team did well to achieve the results they did in their two matches. Maisie was very good as centre-half. Catherine and Sacha were a good double act up front and combined well on several occasions. Goalkeeping is not an easy job and Ella took on the role with enthusiasm. She made some good saves in training and in matches.

U10A

All the matches played were very close. The girls have continued to train hard right through the summer, and are as ready as they will ever be to play matches in Year 6. The players are growing into positions that suit them, and it looks like any combination of Charlotte M, Isabel, Olivia and Lucy will be a formidable force to come up against. In midfield, Charlotte H and Lucy seem quite at home, and have spent the summer perfecting a strong hit, having dispossessed any forward they came across!  Nicky enjoys GK and has quick reactions. The future looks good for these hockey players and I hope that all their hard work pays off next season.

U10B
The U10B team played one match against A team opposition and lost. However, they never stopped trying and their support for one another was very good. They needed to be a little more aware of positional roles but, with more practice, they will develop into a dependable unit of players.
