Hockey: Review for 2005-06

The season started well, with uninterrupted matches and training in September and October. Five girls were selected to attend the England Training Camp at East Grinstead where they received coaching from the England Mens' team and were able to hold the Gold and Bronze Olympic medals won by Richard Leman in Seoul and Los Angeles. A small number of girls also attended the Kent Hockey Assessment days in May. The county were looking for players for their U13 squad, and although none of the Derwent Lodge players were selected this year, they know the standard required and may be recognised in future years.

The U11A team had a good season, and it was the first year that we played in the IAPS National Finals, where 32 top teams from England competed for the trophy. Competition was very tough, and, unfortunately, we had to play on grass! Consequently, we did not qualify for the semi-finals. Only two other Kent teams took part in the nationals, so we were proud to be there, and the girls learned a great deal from the experience. The other highlight of the year was finishing in third place at the Sutton Valence tournament, where our team missed going through to the final on a 1-0 penalty corner countback against Kent College, Canterbury, after no goals were scored at full time. Kent College went on to win the tournament! Hattie Grant kept goal this season, and looked comfortable in that position. She was supported in defence by Daina Clifford and Emma Vickery. Our links were particularly strong, consisting of Sophie Capewell and Katie Brauer. Potentially, the forward line was a force to be reckoned with and, as individuals, this was probably true. However, there were times when the build-up in attack lacked teamwork, but Olivia Harbig, Amy Sommerville, Nicola Wilkinson, Kate Yandle and Georgia Nokes all had moments of inspired play up front.

The B team benefited from training with the A team and developed into a very good team who remained unbeaten in their six matches. Bethan Jones was solid in goal, but often did not have a great deal to do. Alice Taylor also played GK occasionally. This team had strong defence with Charlotte Looker and Stephanie Bryant rock solid at the back. Lily Loveland and Lily Richards moved between defence and attack, and Tabitha Wildi and Amy Stables completed the line-up.

The U10A team was well prepared for the season, having completed a term of after school summer training. Their statistics show that they only lost one of their four matches, and this is indicative of their strength. Our regular formation usually saw Holly Lines in goal, with Louisa Bryant developing as a super sweeper with a massive hit! In front of her, Beth Freeman and Natasha Farrant dominated the mid-field. Nia Lewis, Mary Ellis and Imogen Goring can all play well on the wing, and Anna Wetton and Natasha Brandt seem to be finding their feet in the centre of the attack. Lucy Maunsell also played a couple of matches in defence.

The U10B team won all three of their fixtures, and there are some very good players in the squad. Alex Young is becoming a daring GK who is not intimidated by hard shots at goal. Lauren McNicoll and Francesca Vernon have definitely improved over the summer and Clemmie Watkins, Olivia Samuel, Emily Thompson, Rosie Barrett and Laura Salter all played their part to help the team secure their victories.

The U9s had their 'training match' against Holmewood House and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. It was good to see how the young players coped with their first match, and it was a very worthwhile fixture. these players have also been training hard over the summer in preparation for their fixtures as U10's. Elizabeth Verrell and Emma Gull show early form as goal-scorers, and Laura Beaman can kick well as a goalkeeper. The positions in between are far from settled, but there are several players developing their skills in order to achieve team places.

Full colours:
K Brauer, L Bryant, S Capewell, D Clifford, B Freeman, H Grant, O Harbig, C Looker, G Nokes, A Sommerville, N Wilkinson, K Yandle.
Half colours: S Bryant, N Lewis, L Loveland, L Richards, A Stables, A Taylor, E Vickery.
