Netball: Review for 2002-03

Enthusiasm for Netball remains as high as ever with 103 girls (80%) having represented the school this year. Team practices and 'fun' clubs have been well supported throughout the year and this has been one of the reasons for the continued success we see at all levels in matches. Even at breaktimes the girls practise passing and shooting for fun and we are delighted that they appear to get so much enjoyment out of sport.

U11A 'The Dream Team'
Squad:
L Staffurth, T Tappenden, L Campbell, F Taylor, S Leir, K Pease, B Delany, H Pound, H Smith, J Cornick, O Culmer.

It is hard to know where to start with a team like this! They promised so much and delivered so often in previous years that expectations were always high. When the time came, they fulfilled and indeed surpassed these expectations with the season proving to be highly successful. Devoted to their training, the girls were very well prepared for the start of the season and won tournaments at Beechwood and St Michael's. They completed a hat-trick of tournament wins in March by easily winning the first Sevenoaks School tournament.

Netball teams succeed or fail on the accuracy and consistency of their shooters and Tulip and Oona practised hard to keep their skills honed, and rarely missed! With other wins against Kent College U12B, Vinehall, The Granville, St Michael's and Marlborough House in fixtures, the 'Dream Team' were dynamic on court. Holmewood House were the only team to beat the U11As in a high scoring close match. Throughout the season Hannah dominated the centre court, ably supported by Lara, Siobhan, Katy and Blanche. In defence, Juliet regularly made impressive interceptions to set up attacking moves, and Lorna, Holly and Florence all played important roles defending in the circle.

Such success does not come overnight. Since joining Somerhill these girls have trained hard in order to improve their performance. They are all very versatile, adjusting positions uncomplainingly and sitting out to allow for whatever combination the team requires. Better role models could not be found.

U11B
Squad:
A Kidson, A Hitch, L Campbell, R Boulter, V Bradford, B Delany, H Pound, L Hodgson, R Sommerville, A Goodwin.

A fantastic unbeaten season of netball for the U11Bs. The girls worked well as a team and were sensible and mature in training sessions and matches. The girls played valiantly and with much determination. They deserved their undisputed victories. The team were joint winners of the St Michael's 'B' team tournament, drawing 1-1 with Walthamstow Hall in a closely fought final.

Fixtures were keenly played with close victories over Holmewood House, The Granville and Kent College A team. The team also had an easy win over Marlborough House. Lucy Hodgson deserves special mention for her sheer determination on court. She was always outstanding at this level and equally happy defending or shooting.

U11B/C
Squad:
A mixture of Year 5 and Year 6.

A number of  'non-squad' players enjoyed these fixtures against Hilden Oaks, Rose Hill, The Granville and Hilden Grange. Katie Harris proved to be the rising star of this group for her positive attitude and enthusiasm on court.

Half Colours: K Harris

U10A
Squad:
C-R Hamilton, S Weir, C Daniels, V Young, L Morton, F Maffei, H Barnett.

The first outing tor these girls was to the St Michael's tournament.  The girls showed glimpses of superb teamwork from time to time, and came away as runners-up, losing in the final to Bricklehurst Manor, whom they had already beaten in the section matches. The girls were not quite so 'together' for their next tournament at  Walthamstow Hall, where they were too generous to their opponents and ended up only 4th in their section. However, this keen young team played well in their remaining fixtures with good wins over Vinehall, St Michael's and Marlborough House. They lost to a strong and very tall Holmewood House team but never stopped trying!

Francesca, though petite in stature, proved a difficult player to mark. She cheekily outwitted the opposition on several occasions and was consistent as a shooter. She also played on occasions for the Under 11Bs. Camilla-Rose and Heather also deserve special mention for their play this season.

Half Colours: F Maffei

U10B
Squad:
A Montgomery, K Jenkins, E Darbyshire, R Scott, C Goring, P Morris, M Taylor, N Thompson, C Mogan, G Whatman.

Looking back at the results for this unassuming team, the girls deserve to be very proud of their achievements. They only narrowly lost one match by one goal against St Michael's in a tournament. This was their only defeat. In school fixtures, they had convincing victories over St Michael's, and Kent College 'A' team. Later on in the season the same team from KC managed a draw and DL also drew with Marlborough House and a strong Holmewood House team. The most improved players were Natalie, Catherine and Grace. Two further matches were played by mixed U10 teams and one was won and one was lost.

U9A
Squad: K Alton, J Hawkes, I McNab, O Rendall, N Boulter, C Hollingsworth, L Spence, E Genders

This was a truly excellent season for the talented and versatile U9 A team. Faced with the toughest of opposition, the girls played with determination in every one of  their 13 matches, and easily won the St Michael's tournament scoring 22 goals en route and conceding only one. By the end of the season the team were a formidable force. Our shooting trio of Lucy, Olivia and Charlotte scored a huge 88 goals. Isabel, Nicky and Ella were dominant in mid-court, and the defence of Kerry and Jessica took some beating. The only losses were at Holmewood House and Sutton Valence.  Congratulations to all squad members for their excellent work!

U9B
Squad: C Miles, J Leyburn, K Hoskin, O Harris, A Small, I Bates, L Clark, A Barrett, E Wilkes, E Shotton.

A fine season with excellent results! This dynamic team proved to be unbeatable on court and easily won six fixtures against St Michael's, Vinehall, Claremont, DPS, Marlborough House and The Granville. The opposition only managed to score one or two goals against us in these fixtures, while our girls were popping plenty in at the other end. They achieved a narrow 7-6 victory over Rose Hill 'A' team and drew with Holmewood House and Sutton Valence in their final two fixtures. The most improved player was Alice Barrett. The U9 'C' team won both their matches this season, with Charlotte Simmonds showing the most improvement.

U8
The Year Three girls have shown tremendous enthusiasm for all sports and have worked hard in lessons and training. Every match played saw a vast improvement in ball skills, game awareness and tactical play. Our shooting is more and more consistent and quite a few players displayed ability in this area. Few schools actually play matches in this age range, but we are sure that the girls benefit from the experience. 23 girls from Year Three took part in matches and Sophie Capewell, Hattie Grant, Bethan ]ones, Amy Sommerville and Victoria Estlin played particularly well. Lily Richards improved the most during the season. We are grateful to St Michael's, Holmewood House and Sutton Valence for providing  teams for us to play.
