Netball: Review for 2003-04
Overview
This year every girl in Years 4 to 6 and over half of Year 3 have played in at least one match. We play strong schools on a regular basis and have not only enjoyed success with the A teams, but also find ourselves particularly strong at B, C and D team levels. The lunch time practices and fun clubs were welI attended and the girls receptive to skills training at every level. We have had our best season so far regarding tournaments, and are the proud holders of five trophies.
U11A
The girls in this team truly enjoyed their netball. It was a team of real characters who gelled together in surprising combinations of positions.
Francesca could play anywhere and her skills were much appreciated. Heather and Sammie were aways reliable in defence and played thoughtfully together. Maisie and Fran between them netted most of the 81 goals. In the centre court, Charlotte and Rose settled in well to fill the space, and the speed of Vicky and Camilla Rose around the central zone often left defenders standing.
The highlight of the season came at the end, when they lifted the Beechwood Trophy.
Squad: CR Hamilton**, S Weir**, C Daniels*, M Taylor**, H Barnett**, F Maffei**, V Young**, R macLachlan**
U11B
The girls were unbeaten this season and should be very pleased with their efforts. They stormed through the opening round of the St Michael's 'B' team tournament scoring 11 goals, and conceding only 2. In a tense final, they held off Hilden Oaks and scored a single goal to win the tournament. These girls were reliable in training and keen to follow advice. Catherine and Becky worked tirelessly in the centre to maintain possession and Megan was good in defence. Ella was happy to play in either circle, and the rest of the squad worked hard for the benefit of the team. Mixed U10/11 teams played two further matches against strong Rose Hill teams, resulting in narrow losses.
Squad: P Morris, C Mogan*, M Lindsay-Bayley*, S Surgenor, S Lightwood, B Scott*, N Thompson*, E Darbyshire*, L Morton, G Whatman
U10A
The girls in this young team mean business every time they appear for training, or take their places on court for a match! Their tactical awareness is highly developed for their age and they work tirelessly for each other.
The highlight of their season came at the Walthamstow Hall tournament where teams had travelled long distances to play. Goals came thick and fast throughout the tournament, and they cruised to victory by 6 goals to 2 in the final to win the trophy. Jessica and Charlotte M were very difficult to beat in defence, and, at the other end, Charlotte H, Olivia and Lucy popped in goals from seemingly impossible distances. Nicola and Alice played well in centre court, and the energy of Isabel combined with her speed around the court, upset the flow of play for many of our opposing teams.
This team has great potential, and should do well in their final year.
Squad: I McNab*, J Hawkes, O Rendall, L Spence, N Boulter, C Hollingsworth*, C Miles*, A Barrett
U10B, C and D
This unassuming team was a delight to work with. The girls showed great sportsmanship on court and played to the best of their ability all the time. They deserved their victories and always encouraged each other. They were never put off by the reputations of their opponents and grew in confidence as they realised that they could win – and often did!
Squad: J Bates, L Clark, O Harris, K Alton, K Hoskin, E Genders, J Leyburn, A Small, E Wilkes, L Tomkins
The U10C and D teams enjoyed fixtures against Holmewood House that resulted in two draws.
U9A
The competition for places in this team is intense, and each one of the squad knows that someone is waiting in the wings, should an opportunity arise! Consequently, their output is huge and the energy with which these devoted players train is impressive. The girls were delighted to emerge as joint winners of the St Michael's tournament, with Holmewood House. They overcame grazes and various injuries sustained in the early matches to draw 4-4 in the final and share the shield. Hattie, Victoria and Lily made the most of their height, and snatched balls out of the air to foil attacks. Nicola, Bethan and Katie were very competent in mid court and helped set up many attacking moves. Harriet and Sophie were our sharpshooters who coped well with pressure to score many goals between them.
Squad: S Capewell, L Richards, V Estlin, K Brauer, H Grant, N Wilkinson, B Jones, H Edwards
U9B
This is one of the best B teams that we have seen at Derwent Lodge for some time! The girls are very strong, as their results show, and each individual tries really hard to play her position to the best of her ability. They are quick to learn, and all enjoy their netball. In the St Michael's 'B' team tournament they scored 17 goals, and conceded only 3. This indicates what a good team they are. They were delighted to win the shield, beating strong teams in the process.
Squad: S Bryant, A Thompson, O harbig, A Stables, G Nokes, E Vickery, S Marjoribanks, L Loveland, K Yandle, A Sommerville
A further five matches were played by the U9C and D teams, resulting in three victories and two draws.

What great results our youngest teams achieved this season: unbeaten in all matches at A and B level! In their first match, a couple of the girls were in tears because they were so nervous but they needn't have worried. We knew they were ready for the challenge and they proved us right. They played with such enthusiasm and sense of purpose that they really deserved all their victories. They learned tactics, rules, set pieces and positional role play really quickly and we are all very proud of our Year 3 teams.
Squad: S Atherton, I Goring, N Brandt, R Barrett, L McNicoll, L Bryant, N Farrant, B FReeman, H Lines
U8B
These young players achieved remarkable victories over Holmewood House and St Michael's. It shows real depth of talent within the year group when a B team can achieve such fine results at such an early stage in their playing careers. Year 3 have been a real credit to the school, and we applaud them all for their sporting achievements so far.
Squad: A Young, L Salter, M Ellis, C Watkins, K Tomkins, F Vernon, J Pease
