Netball: Review for 2004-05

This season started really well, with the U10A team sailing to the Isle of Wight to clinch the shield at the Ryde School tournament. This was quickly followed by an impressive win by the same team at the Walthamstow Hall tournament.  Unfortunately, the annual St Michael's netball tournaments were rained off and we could not get to the IAPS tournament because of snow, but the season ended well when the U11A team retained the Sevenoaks School shield in March. In these three events alone, goal averages were amazing, with the teams scoring 75 goals and conceding only 8. The U11A team also achieved third place at the Sevenoaks Prep tournament and 6th place at the Windlesham House tournament.

The U11A team members were very keen in training and put every effort into their matches. They are all extremely good payers who will be assets to their next schools. Results were on the whole a little disappointing considering the wealth of talent in the team but, locally, opposition was very strong at this level. Isabel McNab never failed to give 100% as centre and it was nice to have a choice of shooters in Lucy Spence, Olivia Rendall and Charlotte Hollingsworth. In defence, Nicola Boulter, Charlotte Miles and Jessica Hawkes remained strong and worked well as a unit to prevent many attacking moves from succeeding. Alice Barrett stepped in where she was needed and deserves mention for her good-natured acceptance of playing between the A and B teams. The U11B team always trained hard and enjoyed a few good wins.  They played well at the Sevenoaks School tournament against A teams to finish in 5th position. Emily Wilkes really worked hard in this team displaying good skills on many occasions. The U11C team had two comfortable wins this year.

As mentioned, the U10A team achieved fantastic results and we look forward to next year when we build on what they already know.  Innovative centre pass routines often set the team up well to score early goals by overloading the opposition's defence. The team understood and displayed advanced tactics on court and were rarely stretched in defence. Nicola Wilkinson, Olivia Harbig, Hattie Grant and Sophie Capewell were particularly strong in their positions, and Katie Brauer, Amy Sommerville, Stephanie Bryant and Bethan Jones played excellent netball all season. Harriet Edwards, Emma Vickery and Victoria Estlin also played important matches for the A team. The U10B team won their four matches easily and contain strong performers, all keen to make progress if the opportunity arises.

The U9s won 15 of their 21 matches, with the B team remaining unbeaten.  The A team players are very keen and show promise for the future. There is a lot of competition for places and every girl in Year Four was offered the chance to play in at least one match, which they readily accepted. Next year could be very interesting with so many good performers of the same age!

The U8 teams finished the season with a sound understanding of the game and again, fixtures were offered to everyone. The A and B teams proved that they are capable of playing to expected standards. Rowena Maitland and Annabel Estlin definitely showed their talent for the game and there were several players who impressed us with their versatility in playing different positions.

The junior and senior Inter-House events went smoothly, and for some of Year Three it was their first chance to play a competitive match.  Games were played enthusiastically with Grasmere just beating the other three houses in a closely fought tournament. In the senior section, Grasmere and Windermere were joint winners but all teams should be congratulated on their team work and sportsmanship.
