Our Link With Nepal

HPV Dang is one of three HVP schools in Nepal; there are about 400 boys and girls. The nearby Peace Home houses orphaned children who also attend the school.

Two boarders, now at the Peace Home.
Derwent Lodge first established a link with the HVP schools in Nepal, in 2005. Hannah Humphry-Baker gave an assembly telling the girls about her gap year experience at the school and her subsequent visit after university. The girls immediately wanted send letters to the students in HVP Dang, the most rural of the three schools, and so the link began.
HVP Dang is one of 3 HVP schools in Nepal, see the HVP UK Website. There are 392 students – 156 girls and 236 boys. It is situated in rural Nepal. There are 171 sponsored children. The HVP movement believes that education is very important and should be available for everyone regardless of ability to pay, caste, creed or religious beliefs. It teaches the ideals of peace, tolerance and international fellowship. Check out these leaflets from the schools: Leaflet 1 and Leaflet 2.
A recent development in Dang was the building of the Peace Home. The new home stands opposite the Headmaster’s family home. It provides free accommodation and food for 22 children orphaned and displaced due to war and difficult family situations. Many of these children are vulnerable. In the Peace Home they are taught a culture of peace and harmony which helps them to feel positive about their future.
In 2006 Ghamshyam Yogi, a teacher from the HVP schools, visited Derwent Lodge and opened the children’s eyes to the natural beauty of this very poor country. In the Michaelmas Term 2007 three large boxes full of beautifully made handicrafts arrived from Nepal and we were able to raise over £1100 as the children here bought their Christmas presents! The DL girls set up their own shop, arranged publicity and discovered their natural marketing talents in order to sell as much as possible. Through our assemblies the girls have realised that their generosity was helping provide work for the local women in Nepal, as well as providing funds for improved facilities in HVP Dang. Generous contributions from the Carol Service increased our total donation to HVP Dang to £1807.
The poetry writing of the children at the school can be very moving. A recently received account, HPV Dang: Spreading Its Wings, from one of HVP’s visitors from the UK describes the unique ethos of this remarkable place. More pictures of the school can be found in the photo gallery.
