Physical Education at Derwent Lodge
The Derwent Lodge PE Department aims to provide a quality Physical Education programme in a happy, stimulating and secure environment. Opportunities are offered that promote a positive attitude towards participation in sport. Activities ensure that pupils have the chance to develop a full range of basic movement skills, whilst increasing their knowledge and understanding of the importance of physical activity. Sport has a high profile at Derwent Lodge and the girls enthusiastically participate in lessons, clubs, team practices and matches. There is a real sense of community with a healthy emphasis on respect for one and all.
Michaelmas and Lent Terms sports programme
The girls follow a similar programme for both these terms. They participate in netball, hockey, cross-country, gymnastics and indoor tennis. Interhouse netball tournaments take place in December; cross-country in January, and hockey in March (for Year 4 and above).
Netball clubs and team practices take place on a weekly basis throughout the two terms. Hockey clubs and team practices are offered after school in the 'light' half terms. We join with the boys to offer a weekly after school indoor athletics club. In addition, there is a Year 4 lunchtime football club and an after school senior badminton club.
Summer Term sports programme
The major activities taught in the summer term are rounders, athletics and tennis. Swimming is available in the outdoor pool when the weather is warm enough. Sports Day is the main Interhouse competition of the term and every girl participates in at least two events. There is also Interhouse rounders at the end of term.
Rounders clubs and team practices take place at lunchtimes. There are after school hockey clubs for Years 4 and 5 in preparation for September fixtures. We also hope to offer tennis and athletics clubs; Year 3 football club, and senior lacrosse and cricket clubs.
