Religious Education at Derwent Lodge
Religious studies is taught in all classes in Derwent Lodge. Years 3 and 4 have a double lesson each week and Years 5 and 6 have a single lesson with one prep.
Our scheme of work covers the Old Testament and New Testament for the junior classes where the children become familiar with the best known stories from the Bible and have a chance to experiment with different ways of presenting their work in their books and through drama, singing and assemblies.
Our older pupils are introduced to four of the main world religions. Whilst Christianity is the main world religion taught here it is one of the objectives of the department to make children aware of other faiths and thus Hinduism, Islam and Judaism are studied. Pupils are encouraged to ask some of the difficult questions, to respect the opinions of others and to show tolerance to all.
We aim to encourage an understanding of moral and spiritual awareness, of wonder at our world, and a desire to look after it, in an atmosphere of honesty and trust.
