Rounders: Review for 2003-04
Rounders is the main summer lunchtime activity and 90% of the girls take part in either fun sessions or team practices. The game has moved on in the last year and the modern interpretation of the new rules has necessitated coaching different tactics in the field. Fixtures have become quite exciting as the girls have responded to the challenge.
U11 Rounders
Year 6 girls were very keen on rounders, and thoroughly enjoyed playing. So much so, that, on occasion, tactics and sensible running and fielding were affected by by their mirth, good humour and giggles! Never mind! The A team still managed to achieve third place at the Rosehill Rounders festival, and the B Team won both their matches. The girls put up with being moved around in the search for the best possible fielding combination. By the end Camilla-Rose bowling to Fran at backstop, who rocketed the ball to Grace's safe hands at first base, seemed to work. Vicky worked tirelessly at second deep, and seemed to run miles in games, fielding the ball. Camilla-Rose and Fran also batted very well. It was good to see some new faces in the B's, and they gelled together well for their matches.
U10 Rounders
This intelligent group of players really loved the new interpretation of the rules and were keen to 'steal posts' at any opportunity. Again, our efforts to find the best combination for the benefit of the teams led to players having to be versatile. Five of the B's played in the A's for the odd match, and coped well with the extra pressure. Isabel's batting was consistently good, and she scored many rounders this season, Olivia and Katie bowled well and rarely gave away half-rounders. Lucy and Kerry caught well on posts and, all in all, despite the statistics, this group learned a great deal and should do well next year.
U9 Rounders
The B squad turned out to be formidable batters, scoring 18.5 rounders in each of their two matches to win by huge margins. The C team also had an easy win in their match, where Katherine, Georgina and Abigail all played well. The A's had more matches and had a great start to the season, winning their first four matches. Olivia stood out as a great deep-fielder and used her ability to throw to good effect. This year the group is as keen as ever to learn new skills, and their enthusiasm for playing is most rewarding for their coaches.
U8 Rounders
Year 3 has turned out to be an amazingly talented year group for sport. They are unbeaten in netball and rounders so far. Fielding was excellent in their rounders matches, where the slip-fielding three of Mary, Natasha and Imogen just in front of third base worked a treat in getting people out. Louisa at second base was very reliable and she combined beautifully with Natasha at fourth base. The throwing and catching skills of these youngsters are superb, and it is a joy to see them in action.
