Rounders: Review for 2005-06
The U11A team is made up of a talented group of fielders, and they play good tactical rounders, covering each other well in order to maximise the chances of getting people out. Their short passes, catching and long throws were impressive, but their main weakness proved to be catching big hits out in the deep field. Daina Clifford and Olivia Harbig became famous for their throwing, and Amy Sommerville and Katie Brauer did well to catch throws near the posts, Sophie Capewell developed a very fast bowl, which took many batters by surprise. Nicola Wilkinson played a solid backstop and threw well to 1st post when the batters missed. On the batting front, Nicola Wilkinson played superbly well hitting to the left, and Sophie Capewell, Olivia Harbig and Daina Clifford turned out to be the other 'big-hitters' in the squad. Alice Taylor, Charlotte Looker and Lily Richards also played well throughout the season. In the B Team, Georgia Nokes, Kate Yandle, Emma Vickery, Lucy Reeve-Wing and Stephanie Bryant played their positions well.
The U10A team show promise, and benefited from the catching and throwing skills of the county cricketers mentioned earlier. Like the U11s, they concentrated on the important triangle of bowler, backstop and first post, and batters who failed to connect with the ball were shown no mercy thanks to the talented play from Imogen Goring, Nia Lewis and Natasha Farrant, later replaced by Natasha Brandt following Natasha's bad arm fracture. Louisa Bryant and Beth Freeman were outstanding as fielders, and Mary Ellis took some nice catches. Alex Young, Lucy Maunsell, Anna Wetton and later, Francesca Vernon, completed the line-up. The U10B team once again showed how well they could play and won all three of their matches. We were able to play a B/C team against some of the smaller schools' B teams, and this gave every girl n Year Five the opportunity to play in at least one match. Clemmie Watkins, Emma Smith and Olivia Samuel deserve special mention for their performances for the B's.
The U9A team has some good individual players, and it is nice to see them working on their skills in order to become an effective team. Their fielding is generally sound and they have some decent hitters. I predict that they will be a force to be reckoned with once positions become more constant. They are very keen and practise with enthusiasm. The B team are strong, and we should see a few of this team progress into the A team next year if they continue to work hard on their batting and fielding skills.
The U8 team is very good indeed, and at one school we played, the teacher commented that she has never seen such a strong team at this age! I am inclined to agree with her and credit must go to the batting skills of Mia Smith and Hannah Kinsey in particular, although all of the team usually hit the ball, which is a rare event at this age! The girls are quick with their fielding, and have the ability to catch and throw accurately which makes them unbeatable at the moment! The B team players have impressed me with their attitude to learning new skills and the way in which they are happy to play in various positions to see where they might be most useful. A great start for both teams!
