Tennis: Review for 2004/05
The standard of tennis continues to improve as more curriculum time is devoted to it.
This was the first full season of tournaments and matches and we have fielded strong teams from U8 level right through to U11.
Olivia Rendall and Nicola Wilkinson played superb tennis, culminating in them facing each other in the final of the Cobham Hall tournament where Olivia just beat her younger friend and rival by 7 games to 5. Daina Clifford and Emily Wilkes were the losing semi- finalists in the same tournament. This four soundly beat Sutton Valence U12 team in the Kent Schools U12 knock-out championships before succumbing to the strength of Tonbridge Girls Grammar Year Seven team on an appallingly cold and windy day!
Lucy Spence and Charlotte Hollingsworth played with Olivia and Emily to achieve victory over Marlborough House in a school fixture. In the Kent Schools Championships, Olivia Harbig and Lucy Spence stepped in to play with Emily and Daina for the day. Both pairs finished equal 7th out of 16 teams.
The U10 team is also strong, with the top four of Nicola, Daina, Oiivia H and Sophie Capewell showing their strength by not dropping a set against Marlborough House. Sophie and Louisa Bryant finished a creditable 3rd out of 20 teams in the Kent Schools Championships, finally losing to Russell House in three sets in the semi-final. Nia Lewis, Mary Ellis and Imogen Goring have also played in Kent tournaments at 'Orange' level, finishing about half way down in their age divisions.
The U8's show great depth in tennis and there are easily 12 players who could all cope with tournament play. Hannah Capewell as number one played some lovely tennis against strong opponents. Others who have played in tournaments are Lucinda Kidson, Lily Wadsworth, Rowena Maitland and Annabel Estlin. All these players have potential and it is hoped that they will get even more opportunities to play next year.
Full Colours: O Rendall, D Clifford, N Wilkinson
Half Colours: E Wilkes, L Spence, C Hollingsworth, S Capewell, O Harbig
