Based on the number of boys wanting to play tennis during break times, tennis has been very much on the up and up. Unfortunately, however, this hasn't been one of the most successful seasons as far as results go!
The Under 12 squad of Luke Spurling, Duncan Bristow, Ben Moffat and Edward Stocker won their first round match of the Kent Schools Championship against Chiddingstone in emphatic style, without dropping a game. In the second round they came up against Hayes School in Bromley, a school which we had never played before. Hayes were far too strong and, if it wasn't for a fighting win by Edward, we would have experienced our first whitewash in many years. Hayes went on to win this year's event.
In the annual Kent Schools Doubles competition, at the Bromley Tennis Centre, we entered teams in the Red and Orange sections. The boys all represented us well throughout the day; however we failed to win either event, although Spencer Alderton and David Wilkinson did well to reach the semi-finals of the Orange event, one year younger than many of their opponents.
The Spurling name once again finds its way onto the Senior Singles Champions Trophy at Yardley Court after defeating Duncan Bristow in a close final. William McEachern, who will be missed after many years as a valuable member of tennis squads whilst at Yardley, couldn't quite live up to his No.1 seeding and fell in the early rounds to a relative unknown! The Middles tournament was hit by walk-overs and bad weather, with Jonathan Smith finally making his way to the winner's podium. Finally, Spencer Alderton and David Wilkinson fought their way through to the final of the Junior competition where they battled strong winds to find a winner. Eventually Spencer conquered the conditions and came away with a good win.
